What are my resources
for designing units and
lessons?

As a teacher it is vital to use your resources. Being a new teacher to the second grade I am not quite sure how this year will pan out, but I do know we intend to work with each other in our lesson planning. We believe that the more cooks you have in side our second grade kitchen the more ideas, activities, assessments, ect you can add to your teaching bag.

Of course your resources should not stop there...you should always run online to check out any demonstrations of lessons you might be implementing. However, don't get sucked in to deep or you might never make it out:D You have to balance the time spent on researching a topic, team colaberation and putting it all together to make sense for your kiddos. It's a tricky thing, but experience only brings quicker pace resources ready to go from the previouse year.

How do I interact with
the standards?

In most cases the curriculum is already standards based friendly, so this is just an added factor contributed to my daily grind. I make sure I note the standards on the backside of my lesson plans, so I can write them on the board. The goal is to show the students what the objectives of the day are and to try and bring them to an understanding of the bigger picture!

How do I approach
student assessment?

Once I have the individual students post assessment I can use this to further assist each individual childs need. I take the grouping approch for students. This allows me to see more clearly who needs that extra pre-teaching before a lesson, or who needs that quick extra paractice with the teacher after they are let go. You begin to get a feel for your students needs and it just flows into a natural process of your daily routine.

Again, the post assessment will be reused for the assessment once the unit is completed to show the growth of each individual student.
How do I approach
post-assessment?

When I am looking for a post assessment I want to get a feel for what the students know about the subject we will be covering. If it is a math concept I wil give a large scale test covering the whole unit, so I can see how much they already understand the concepts. From that point I can use this tool as a starting point. It could be a marker for me to come to an understanding that I need to jump back and review a linking concept before pressing on, or if I can just plunge in!
